Engulf

2015

A light and space interactive installation.

Inspired by the reticent grandeur of a subterranean cave, we sought to create an experience that captures the beauty of light so precious in an engulfing, dark atmosphere. Engulf is a journey of exploration into the dark that aims to engage the senses as well as the imagination.

Long strips of paper that nearly reach the ground are suspended densely from the ceiling, reducing sight to the immediate vicinity and stifling ambient sound. You lose your sense of direction and space. The slightest disturbance of these strips upon movement causes each one to light up individually, creating a localised zone of light and therefore sight, before fading away again. The very action of parting strips of paper is akin to several actions – the drawing of curtains in the morning that floods a room with light; clearing a path in the dense undergrowth of a forest unexplored.

Paper is used for its translucent nature that provides diffused illumination. This, as well as its usage on a large scale, elevates its humble status as a material to create an effect that is as elegant as it is simple. It also naturally encourages slower movements and is soothing to the touch, allowing fuller appreciation of the moment.

Within Engulf, you create light through your movements, you are a functioning component; you are light and you are space.
